DIVERSE COMMUNITIES DIVERSE MEDIA
International Conference, 21-25 july 2014
The Centre for Social and Creative Media at the University of Goroka is pleased to host the tenth OURMedia conference from 22-‐25 July 2014. Founded in 2000,OURMedia/ NUESTROSMedios is a global network with the goal of facilitating a long-term dialogue between academics, activists, practitioners, artists, and policy experts around community media and media for social change. OURMedia seeks to promote diversity in media recognising that all communities need to communicate, to express themselves, to inform and be informed, to dialogue with others, and to network.The OURMedia conference provides a space for collaboration in which needs and alternatives can be identify in the areas of communication and information infrastructure, policy, and research. Ultimately, the goal of OURMedia is to design and develop initiatives that can strengthen citizens' media, community media, and alternative media in national and international arenas.
OURMedia10 in Papua New Guinea is a unique opportunity to bring the OURMedia network to the most diverse and largest country of the South Pacific Islands. It provides a platform for the South Pacific region to contribute to global discussions around community media and communication for social change while strengthening dialogue across regions. The recent impact of new media technologies in the region provides new opportunities and contexts to discuss the role media can play for individuals and communities.
CONFERENCE THEMES
We invite presentations, workshops, papers, roundtable discussions and panel proposals realign to concepts of media practice, presenting case studies of media initiatives both from the region and internationally and providing analysis of recent developments, challenges and successes in the areas of communication and social change. We welcome proposals for exhibitions, film screenings or performances.
As part of the conference field trips to visit community organisations and group will be organised where participants will get an insight into localinitiatives and projects.
Suggested conference themes for OURMedia10 include:
• Communication research with a focus on Indigenous approaches
• Transnational connections, distribution and exhibition networks
• Media technologies and innovation including mobile phones and social media
• Communication for Development (C4D) with content areas such as climate change and environment, health and gender
• Media policy, regulation and freedom of expression
• Media training and education
• Social movements, participation and social change
ABSTRACTS AND PAPERS
Please submit a 300-‐500 word abstract and a 100 words bio of the author(s)/contributors to info@ourmedia-‐network.org by the 10th of March 2014.
We will respond by the 21st of March 2014.
