General Guidelines

To qualify for the Diageo Africa Business Reporting Awards 2011 all submissions must have been published or broadcast in the period 18 April 2010 - 20 March 2011. Submissions in all media are welcome, including blogs, podcasts, online content, print, radio and TV entries. Entries must reach the secretariat by 21 March 2011.

To enter, select the category or categories you would like to be considered for and fill-in the online entries form for each individual entry. Please refer to the criteria and submission format requirements for each category. All entry material that cannot be attached to the entry form (video, audio) must be sent via post/courier to your nearest secretariat (details below).

Each award is given to an individual or team. Submissions can be made on behalf of an individual or team as long as permission has been provided by each team member confirming that they have read and understood the terms and conditions, which must be accepted in order to participate in these Awards. Entries can also be submitted on behalf of someone else, especially if the creator of the entry does not want to be identified by name, for political reasons or otherwise.

There is no limit to the number of submissions per individual/team except in the case of 'Best Newcomer', 'Media of the Year' and 'Journalist of the Year' in which the individual/media outlet can enter only once. However, individual pieces submitted as part of these entries can be entered in other categories.

There are no entry fees.

Liberian Journalists Drill in Elections Reporting

The National Elections Commission (NEC) in collaboration with the University of Liberia Mass Communication Department conducted a two-day media training for Liberian journalists on elections reporting under the theme: "Enhancing Professional Media Reportage Through Elections Training".

 Supported by the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) the training was held over the weekend, December 10-11, 2010 in Gbarnga City, Bong County. The purpose of the workshop is to enhance the techniques and skills of Journalists on elections reporting so as not unduly instigate violence riotous deportment amongst the electorate.

 

The training workshop started in earnest with an Official Statement delivered by NEC Chairman James M. Fromayan. Chairman Fromayan thanked the organizers and participants for the positive efforts and understanding as the nation prepares for the 2011 Legislative and Presidential elections. He urged participants to take the workshop seriously and use the knowledge acquired in a professional and ethical manner in the process leading to 2011 elections and on Election Day, itself.

 

Chairman Fromayan said professionalism and honesty on the part of all players and participants will positively contribute to the   successful conduct of peaceful, free, fair, transparent and credible 2011 Legislative and Presidential elections.

 

The NEC Chairman's presentation was followed by remarks offered by IFES, the Press Union of Liberia (PUL) and UL Mass Communication Department.

 

Like Day-one, Day-two of the workshop was interactive. Various speakers and facilitators including Professors Joe W. Mulbah and Weade K. Wureh of U.L. Mass Communication Department made presentations on a number of topics such as" Media Ethics and Elections Reporting," and "The Technique of on the Spot Reporting of Election Results". Messrs Nathan P. Garbie, Bobby W. Livingstone, James Wallace and A. Blamo Sieh of the NEC also made presentations on various issues such as: Challenges ahead of the 2011 Elections: Where is the NEC? "Voter's Registration Procedures and Applicants", "Referendum-Where are we? Preparations, Challenges and Prospects".  "Laws Governing Elections in Liberia".

 

Bong County Superintendent, Rennie Jackson, who attended the closing session of the workshop   presented certificates of Participation to Journalists on behalf of the Mass Communication Department of the University of Liberia.

La Maison de la presse du Niger entérine l’adhésion de trois nouveaux membres

Niamey, le 16 janvier 2011- L'Association, Maison de la presse du Niger, a confirmé ce dimanche 16 janvier 2010 l'adhésion de trois (3) nouveaux membres, à l'issue d'une Assemblée générale extraordinaire, qui s'est tenue le même jour, à son siège social, situé dans l'enceinte du Ministère des sports.

Au cours de cette Assemblée générale, présidée par M.Boubacar Diallo, PCA de la Maison de la presse, les délégués des 14 structures membres ont examiné l'unique point  inscrit à l'ordre du jour à savoir l'adhésion de trois nouvelles organisations des médias.

Après l'examen des demandes d'adhésion assorties des textes régissant ces associations, l'Assemblée générale a entériné à l'unanimité (soit la totalité des 14 membres) leur intégration en tant que membre de la Maison de la presse.  Auparavant, un travail d'examen minutieux des demandes a été effectué par le Conseil d'Administration de la Maison de la Presse, en sa session du dimanche 9 janvier 2011.

Les trois nouveaux membres sont la Coordination des radios décentralisées du Niger (CRDN), le Réseau des journalistes pour la santé (RJPS) et l'Association des promoteurs de radio et télévisions privées du Niger (APRTPN).

Avec ces nouvelles adhésions, la Maison de la presse regroupe désormais dix-sept (17) organisations socioprofessionnelles des médias du Niger qui sont :

La Maison de la Presse est une association indépendante et apolitique de droit nigérien, créée en mars 2005, à l'initiative de douze (12) organisations socioprofessionnelles du secteur des médias. Elle est autorisée à exercer ses activités par récépissé provisoire No 106 PC/CUN du 05 avril 2007.

Cadre fédérateur des organisations des professionnels des média nigériens, la Maison de la Presse a pour objectif général de promouvoir le pluralisme médiatique et l'Indépendance de la Presse.

CNN MULTICHOICE AFRICAN JOURNALIST AWARDS 2011

CNN International and MultiChoice this week officially launched the CNN MultiChoice African Journalist 2011 Awards. The winners of these prestigious annual Awards will be announced at a gala ceremony to be held in Johannesburg, South Africa in June 2011.

Tony Maddox, Executive Vice President and Managing Director of CNN International, said: "The CNN MultiChoice African Journalist Awards have been encouraging excellence in journalism across the continent for 16 years and are truly a highlight in CNN's editorial calendar. Sam Rogers, from e.tv South Africa, was awarded the top prize at the CNN MultiChoice African Journalist 2010 Awards ceremony. Sam, won for 'The Curse of the Nobody People', which was chosen from among 2074 entries from 44 nations across the African continent.

Sam said: "Winning the CNN MultiChoice African Journalist of the Year was possibly the highlight of my career. What an honour to be chosen a winner among so many brilliant African journalists, to be listed alongside the very best who have won this prestigious accolade over the years. What a wonderful platform the CNN MultiChoice award is. It has allowed us to broadcast to a wider audience, to highlight the plight of persecuted Tanzanian albinos and has begun changing perceptions in that region. Their voices were finally heard. "

Over the past 16 years, the competition has grown in size and status to become Africa's most prestigious media event. In 2010, a 'Highlights Programme' of the ceremony, held in Kampala, Uganda, was broadcast in 47 African countries, on the Africa Channel in the US, UK and the Caribbean, OBE TV and RTP Africa.

Finalists in the 2011 competition will participate in a four day finalists' programme that will include a media forum and networking opportunities with senior journalists, editors, business leaders and media owners from across the continent, culminating in a gala awards ceremony in June, 2011. All finalists receive a cash prize and each category winner also receives a laptop and printer. The CNN MultiChoice African Journalist 2011 will receive an additional cash prize and a trip to CNN Center in Atlanta.

The independent judging panel includes: Ikechukwu Amaechi, Editor, Daily Independent, Nigeria; Jean-Paul Gérouard, Deputy Editor-in-Chief, France 3 TV; Ferial Haffajee, Editor-in-Chief, City Press, South Africa; Joel Kibazo, journalist and media consultant; Arlindo Lopes, Secretary General, Southern African Broadcasting Association; José Luís Mendonça, Press Counsellor, Angolan Permanent Delegation to UNESCO; Zipporah Musau, Managing Editor, Magazines, The Standard Group Ltd, Kenya; Kim Norgaard, CNN Bureau Chief, South Africa.

The competition is open to African nationals who are professional journalists including freelancers across print, television, internet, photographic and radio.
